Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Stardate: 8210.3
Original Airdate: Jul 27, 1984
(scenes from the end of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.") [Enterprise engineering]
SPOCK: Don't grieve, Admiral, ...it is logical. The needs of the many ...outweigh... [Torpedo bay]
KIRK (OC): We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honoured dead. This death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world, a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel that sacrifice a vain or empty one. Of my friend, I can only say this. Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, ...his was the most ...human.
Spock's Voice: Space, the final frontier. ...These are the continuing voyages of the Starship Enterprise. ...Her ongoing mission, to explore strange new worlds. ...To seek out new lifeforms and new civilisations. ...To boldly go where no man has gone before.
OPENING CREDITS [Enterprise bridge]
U.S.S. Enterprise. Captain's personal log. With most of our battle damage repaired, we're almost home. Yet I feel uneasy and I wonder why. Perhaps it's the emptiness of this vessel. Most of our trainee crew has been reassigned. Lieutenant Saavik and my son, David are exploring the Genesis planet which he helped create. And Enterprise feels like a house with all the children gone. No, more empty than even that. The death of Spock is like an open wound. It seems that I have left the noblest part of myself back there ...on that newborn planet.
KIRK: Status, Mister Sulu? [Enterprise engineering]
SCOTT: I'm almost done, sir. You'll be fully automated by the time we dock. [Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Your timing is excellent, Mister Scott. You've fixed the barn door after the horse has come home. How much refit time till we can take her out of here? [Enterprise engineering]
SCOTT: Eight weeks, sir. But you don't have eight weeks so I'll do it for ya in two. [Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Mister Scott. Have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of four? [Enterprise engineering]
SCOTT: Certainly, sir. How else can I keep my reputation as a miracle worker? [Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Mister Sulu, take the con. I'll be in my quarters. [Merchantman bridge]
CAPTAIN: Steady, ...steady boys. Keep scanning... I thought you people were reliable. ...Where the hell is he! [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Lights up! [Merchantman bridge]
VALKRIS: (in Klingonese) Transmission completed. ...You will find it useful. [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Then you have seen i? [Merchantman bridge]
VALKRIS: (in Klingonese) I have, my lord. [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Unfortunate. [Merchantman bridge]
VALKRIS: (in Klingonese) Understood. [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Thrusters! [Merchantman bridge]
CAPTAIN: What's the hell's going on? When do I get paid off? [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) You will be remembered with honour. ...Fire. (the Enterprise approaches Spacedock) [Enterprise bridge]
UHURA: Approach control, ...this is Enterprise. Ready for docking maneuver. [Spacedock control room]
VOICE (OC): Acknowledge, door closed. [Enterprise bridge]
UHURA: Would you look at that? [Spock's quarters]
McCOY: (in Spock's voice) Jim, ...Help me. ...You left me on Genesis. ...Why did you do that? ...Help me. [Enterprise torpedo bay]
MORROW: You've all done remarkable service under the most difficult conditions. You'll be receiving Starfleet's highest commendation, and more importantly, extended shore leave. ...That is, all but you, Mister Scott. They need your wisdom on the new Excelsior. ...Report there tomorrow as Captain of Engineering. [Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KIRK (on viewscreen): To fully understand the events on which I report, it is necessary to review the theoretical data on the Genesis device as developed by Doctors Carol and David Marcus. Genesis, simply put, is life from lifelessness. It was the intention to introduce the Genesis Device into a preselected area of a lifeless space body, a moon or other dead form. The device when delivered would instantaneously cause the Genesis effect. Instead of a dead moon, a living, breathing planet now exists, capable of sustaining whatever lifeforms we see fit to deposit on it.
THE GENESIS PLANET [Grissom bridge]
SAAVIK (OC): We have reached destination planet at point zero three five. [Kirk's apartment]
KIRK: Absent friends. [Electronic center]
COMPUTER VOICE: Engine Room, Flight Recorder Visual. Stardate 8128.7 eight. [Grissom orbiting the Genesis planet]
ESTEBAN (OC): Transporter room, stand by to energise. [Genesis planet surface - sub-tropical]
ESTEBAN (on intercom): Grissom to Saavik. We're picking up radiation from the lifeform. [Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Very well. Exercise caution, Lieutenant. This landing is Captain's discretion and I'm the one who's out on a limb. [Genesis planet surface - sub-tropical
SAAVIK: I'll try to remember that. [Starfleet officer's lounge]
MORROW: No. Absolutely not, Jim, ...You are my best officer. But I am Commander, Starfleet, so I don't break rules! [A cosmopolitan bar]
WAITRESS: Long time, Doc. [Genesis Planet arctic]
SAAVIK: Saavik to Grissom. We are definitely reading a second lifeform. [Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: What the hell is going on down there? [Prison cell]
GUARD #1: Make it quick, Admiral. They're moving him to the Federation funny farm. [Prison outer office]
SULU: Where's Admiral Kirk? [Prison cell]
GUARD #1: Admiral, ...Starfleet is.... [Enterprise turbolift]
KIRK: Unit two, this is unit one. The Kobayashi Maru has set sail for the promised land. Acknowledge.
(U.S.S. Excelsior in Spacedock)
[Excelsior corridor]
STYLES: Ah, Mister Scott. Calling it a night?
[Old City transporter station]
UHURA: Roger. Old City Station at twenty-two hundred hours. All is well.
[Enterprise bridge]
SCOTT: As promised, she's all yours, sir. All systems automated and ready. A chimpanzee and two trainees could run her.
[Style's quarters]
FIRST OFFICER (on intercom): Yellow Alert! Captain to the bridge. Yellow Alert!
[Spacedock cafeteria]
STARFLEET VOICE: ...Alert! Yellow Alert! All stations, Yellow Alert! ...Yellow Alert! Yellow Alert! All stations, Yellow Alert!
[Enterprise bridge]
SULU: One minute to space doors.
[Excelsior bridge]
STARFLEET VOICE: Yellow Alert!
[Enterprise bridge]
SULU: Thirty seconds to space doors.
[Excelsior bridge]
STYLES: Stand by, tractor beam!
[Enterprise bridge]
CHEKOV: Excelsior closing to four thousand metres, sir.
[Excelsior bridge]
STYLES: Kirk! If you do this, you'll never sit in the Captain's chair again.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Warp speed.
[Excelsior bridge]
STYLES: Prepare for warp speed! Standby transwarp drive!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Scotty, as good as your word.
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
(Saavik and David find a young Vulcan)
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Yes, Saavik, go ahead.
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: We have found the life sign. It is a Vulcan child, perhaps eight to ten Earth years of age.
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: A child! How did he get there?
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: It is Doctor Marcus' opinion that this is... That the Genesis effect has in some way regenerated ...Captain Spock.
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Ah, ...Saavik, that's, ah, that's extraordinary. What would you like to do next?
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: Request permission to beam aboard immediately.
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Saavik Does Doctor Marcus think there could be any chance of, ...ah, ...radioactive contamination?
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
DAVID: No.
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Well, all the same, I'm going to advise Starfleet and get instructions.
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: I'm sure Starfleet would approve, sir.
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: Stand by on this channel. ...Go.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Gunner! Target engine only!
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: Captain, what is happening?
[Grissom bridge]
ESTEBAN: We are under attack! Stand by for evasive...
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Fire!
[Genesis planet surface - arctic]
SAAVIK: Grissom! This is Saavik on emergency frequency. Come in please!
[Enterprise bridge]
SULU: Estimating Genesis two point nine hours, present speed.
[Genesis planet - sub-tropical]
(Kruge using a scanner and two other crewmen)
[Genesis planet - arctic]
SAAVIK: It's time for total truth between us. This planet is not what you intended, or hoped for, is it?
[Genesis planet - sub-tropical]
KLINGON VOICES (OC): (in Klingonese)
[Genesis planet - cavern]
DAVID: This planet is ageing in surges.
[Enterprise bridge]
CHEKOV: Sir, Starfleet calling U.S.S. Grissom. A warning about us.
[Genesis planet - cavern]
(the planet trembles and the young Spock cries out)
[Enterprise bridge]
SULU (OC): We are secured from warp speed... Now entering Genesis Sector.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
MALTZ: Vessel entering sector.
[Enterprise bridge]
CHEKOV (OC): I'd swear something that was there sir.
[Genesis planet - cavern]
KIRK (on intercom): Grissom, this is Enterprise calling. Do you read?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
TORG: But sir! Federation starship approaching.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Bring me up!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Grissom, this is Enterprise calling. Do you read?
[Genesis planet - cavern]
KIRK (on intercom): Grissom, this is Enterprise calling. Please come in.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Battle alert.
[Enterprise bridge]
CHEKOV: Nothing on my scanners, sir.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
MALTZ (OC): Range, three thousand kellicams.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: There. That distortion. See it?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
MALTZ (OC): Firing range, sir.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Opinion, Mister Sulu?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
MALTZ: One thousand kellicams, closing!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: All power to the weapons systems.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Wait! ...Wait.
[Enterprise bridge]
McCOY: No shields?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
MALTZ: (in Klingonese) five hundred Kellicams!
[Enterprise bridge]
SULU: Klingon Bird of Prey, sir! She's arming torpedoes!
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Emergency power to the thrusters!
[Enterprise bridge]
CHEKOV: Sir, the shields non-responsive.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Fire!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Emergency power! Prepare to return fire. Mister Scott, can you transfer power to the phaser banks.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
TORG: Ready to fire emergency tube.
[Enterprise bridge]
KRUGE (OC): Do not lecture me about treaty violations. The Federation, in creating an ultimate weapon, has become a gang of Intergalactic criminals.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: It is not I who will surrender, it is you! ...On the planet below, I have three prisoners from the team who developed your doomsday weapon. If you do not surrender immediately, I will execute them, one at a time, as enemies of galactic peace.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Who is this? How dare you take prisoners?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Who I am is not important. That I have them is. ...I will allow you speak to them.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
SAAVIK: Admiral, this is Lieutenant Saavik.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Is ...David with you?
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
SAAVIK: He is not himself, but he lives.
[Enterprise bridge]
SAAVIK (on intercom): He is subject to rapid ageing, ...like this unstable planet.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
DAVID: Hello, sir. It's David.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: I'm sorry I'm late.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
DAVID: It's okay, ...I should have known you'd come. Saavik's right, this planet is unstable. It's going to destroy itself in a matter of hours.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: David! ...What went wrong?
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
DAVID: I went wrong.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: David, I don't understand.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
DAVID: I'm sorry, sir. Just don't surrender. Genesis doesn't work! I can't believe they'd kill us for it.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Admiral, your young friend is mistaken. I meant what I said. And now, to show my intentions are sincere, I shall kill one of the prisoners.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Wait a minute! Give me a chance to talk...
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) Kill one of them. ...I don't care which.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
(David fights with a Klingon who kills him)
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Saavik? ...David?
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
SAAVIK: Admiral, ...David is dead.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Klingon bastard! ...Klingon bastard! You've killed my son! ...You Klingon bastard!
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
KRUGE: There are two more prisoners, Admiral. Do you want them killed too? ...Surrender your vessel!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: All right. All right, damn you! ...All right! ...Give me a minute to inform my crew.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: I give two minutes for you, and your gallant crew. ...Take every last man. Form a boarding party, armed heavily!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Mister Sulu, what is the crew complement of a Bird-of-Prey?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: No tricks, Kirk. You have one minute.
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: No tricks. ...I'm looking forward to meeting you.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: (in Klingonese) To the transporter room. Success!
[Enterprise bridge]
KIRK: Computer. This is Admiral James T. Kirk requesting security access. Computer. Destruct Sequence One, code one, one-A.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Kirk, your time runs out.
[Enterprise transporter room]
KIRK: All set?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Transporter stand by!
[Enterprise transporter room]
(the Klingons replace the Enterprise crew)
[Enterprise bridge]
TORG: My Lord. The ship appears to be deserted.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: How can that be? They're hiding!
[Enterprise bridge]
TORG: Yes sir. But the bridge appears to be run by computer. It is the only thing speaking.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Speaking? Let me hear.
[Enterprise bridge]
COMPUTER VOICE: Nine, ...eight, ...seven, ...six, ...five,...
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KRUGE: Get out! Get out of there! Get out!
(explosions rip through the Enterprise. Its crew on Genesis watch the fireball streak through the planet's atmosphere)
[Genesis planet - Kirk's landing]
KIRK: My god, Bones. What have I done?
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
SAAVIK: No, don't touch him!
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KIRK (on intercom): I know this will come as a pleasant surprise for you.
[Genesis - Klingon camp]
KIRK: Our ship was the victim of an unfortunate accident. Sorry about your crew, but as we say on Earth, ...'c'est la vie', ...I have what you want. ...I have the secret of Genesis. ...You're gonna have to bring us up there to get it. ...Do you hear me! ...I'm waiting for you! What is your answer?
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KIRK: Don't!
[Bird-of-Prey sickbay]
McCOY: Spock. For God's sake talk to me! ...You struck this damn thing in my head, remember? Remember? Now tell me what to do with it. Help me. ...I'm gonna tell you something that ...I never thought I'd hear myself say. But it seems that I've missed you. I don't think I could stand to lose you again.
[Vulcan - temple area]
UHURA: Ambassador, They are on approach. They're requesting permission to land.
[Bird-of-Prey bridge]
KIRK: Mister Sulu, you're on manual.
[Vulcan - temple area]
(the Bird-of-Prey settles on the landing pad and with Sarek watching the crew appear bearing a stretcher with Spock on it)
[Vulcan temple]
PRIESTESS: (in Vulcan) Kal-tor kal-if-fah.
[Vulcan temple area - sunrise]
(a gong is sounded and the High Priestess, Sarek and McCoy emerge)
...AND THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES...
